One of the most common questions we get at Dune Volt is: do I need fat tyres? The short answer is — probably yes. Here's why.
What are fat tyres?
Fat tyres are typically 3.5–5 inches wide (compared to 1.5–2.5" on a standard city bike). That extra rubber means more contact with the ground, better grip, and a much smoother ride over uneven surfaces.
Fat tyre advantages
- Absorb road vibration and bumps naturally — no suspension needed
- Better traction on gravel, sand, grass, and wet roads
- More stable at low speeds (great for urban stop-start riding)
- Forgiving for new riders
When a narrower tyre makes sense
- You ride exclusively on smooth, sealed bike paths
- You want maximum speed efficiency over long flat distances
- Weight is a primary concern
The Dune Volt range is built around fat tyres
From the 20 x 4" on the Roamer, Nomad, Pace, and Retro models, to the beefy 20 x 4.5" on the Rhino, the entire Dune Volt lineup is designed to handle real Australian conditions — not just smooth bike paths.
Bottom line
Unless you're racing on a velodrome, fat tyres are the more practical choice for Australian conditions — especially if your route includes any gravel, beach paths, or rough suburban roads.
