Commuting by e-bike is one of the smartest switches you can make — lower running costs, no parking stress, and you arrive without breaking a sweat. But with so many models available, how do you pick the right one? Here's what to look for.
1. Range: How far do you actually ride?
Most Australian commuters travel 5–20 km each way. A bike with 50–90 km of real-world range gives you a comfortable buffer. The Nomad leads the lineup here with up to 100 km on a dual battery — ideal for longer routes or riders who can't charge at work. For shorter commutes, the Roamer (50 km) or Cruise (60 km) are excellent value.
2. Portability and storage
If you need to carry your bike into an office, apartment lift, or onto public transport, weight matters. The Flow Mini at 33 kg with a compact 16" frame is the lightest in the range and easiest to manoeuvre in tight spaces.
3. Ride comfort on urban roads
Fat tyres (20 x 4") absorb bumps from potholes and kerbs far better than narrow road tyres. Most Dune Volt models come standard with fat tyres, so you're covered whether your commute is smooth bike paths or rougher suburban streets.
4. Step-through vs. standard frame
If you're frequently stopping at lights or wear work clothes, a step-through frame makes mounting and dismounting much easier. The Retro 2 and Retro 2 Pro both offer easy-mount step-through designs with 60–70 km of range.
Our commuter picks
